Proporsal: Forth Essay

In my final essay, I am going to compare the film Metropolis by Fritz Lang and The book,The Artificial Silk Girl by Irmgard Keun. In Comparison of both stories is German culture and Germany’s industry in that time period.

I want to focus on the main characters: Freder, Maria and the workers. This movie reflects the class of people. Indeed, inequality of people extremely affect to the workers. Indeed, this metropolis movie emphasis the isolation of high and low level of people we can call the slaves. The movie shows about the inequality of people in the society . Moreover, this movie focuses on the future world, for example, the transportation, the civilization, and the robot. In 1933, The Artificial Silk Girl was banned by Nazi. Moreover, the copies of this story destroyed. Doris, a main character was during 1930s Berlin or during pre of second world war. Doris is the person who loves glamorous and fame in life. In contrast, she finds the poverty and ruthlessness. In term of “culture” she can sleep with a married man because she has to survive from struggling with poverty.

I will compare and contrast about the culture in both stories and how the character of both stories create the culture. In addition to how the time after world war affect the poverty of people in Germany, how the culture that the rich people can be a leader of the poor people in the film and how is the story reflects the culture in that time period as well.

“coup de grace” OED

1. “Hit her on the left of her skull. I’d say it knocked her out, or at least down and groggy, then the stab wounds were the coup de grace” (Mieville 22).
2. “Coup de grace” (n.) [Lit. stroke of grace] means
A blow by which one condemned or mortally wounded is ‘put out of his misery’ or dispatched quickly; hence fig. a finishing stroke, one that settles or puts an end to something.
Coup means blow, stroke is French word. “Adopted in Middle English in a literal sense, and naturalized in pronunciation in fig. sense, as a non-naturalized word, with modern French pronunciation (except that in English the vowel is made long); it also occurs in many French phrases and expressions borrowed in English.” (Oxford English Dictionary).
3. Etymology is from Middle French word. “etymologie established account of the origin of a given word” (Oxford English Dictionary). Etymology is from France. First used was 1622. Or “(2nd half of the 12th cent. in Old French; frequently from early 16th cent.)” (Oxford English Dictionary).
4. “Coup de grace” explains the action that is a part of cause of death of the woman. Furthermore, the dead woman or Fulana detail has stab wounds. This vocabulary helps to understand more how she was hit or stroke with “something heavy and blunt” (Mieville 23). As a result “coup de grace” is helpful in identification.

Dunning loves opium…

I am going to write about Ralph Cheever Dunning. He was an American poet. He was born in Detroit. Moreover, he was awards in Poetry’s Helen Haire Nevinson Prize. I have used some information from DNB, the DLB and Wikipedia but I could not find deep detail of his life. I think his life in general is really interesting, because it is sound wonder to me that he uses opium. In my paper, I will talk about Ezra Pound that he was hanging out with. For example, in chapter 15, “An Agent of Evil”. Ezra want Hemingway to give him the opium. “Hem, I want you to keep this jar of opium and give it to Dunning only when he needs it” (Hemingway 109).
The significance of his work is poetry that provides thirteen poems. It is “The Four Winds” by Ralph Cheever Dunning. Ezra Pound explains that Dunning’s poetry is beauty and musicality.
In contrast, I have read the poetry, “Dead Youth”. Dunning provides the death of young woman. He Still feels she is here with him every time that the wind blows. I feel this poem is sad but he provides how beauty of a young woman in his poem. “The dawn has come, the day is here– but she, my youth, is gone. Upon those very winds that seemed to be her very breath.” I like his poems and I will continue close-reading read them too.

Blog post #5

Doris and Christopher are the main characters from both stories. The writing style is the first person perspective in adventure of life during Weimar Republic and Nazi get a power. Doris’s life, she visuals herself happy in a judgment society. She does not care what people think of her. She likes fame, love, fortune and express herself through the fashion. In fact, the culture shows superficiality. Her life will be in a beautiful way but she faces poverty in her life. Indeed, she as a material girl who likes make up and wear a beautiful costume. She assumes herself as a camera because she wants to see her life as a movie. Moreover, she records everything around her. In term of economic conditions and critique of social are main events in her observation. Poverty, Unemployment and money trouble are struggling so, she uses sexual relationship to another in an effort to succeed and survive. “I’m moving right along with them with my fur that is so gray and soft – and my feet are racing, my skin is turning pink, the air is chilly and the lights are hot” (Keun 88). She describes what the berlin looks like is. Moreover, the weather are warm and cold. She is so hungry. I think she is honestly person that can tell another the truth so, that is why she can find the way to survive. Economic conditions and critique of social are main events in her observation. Poverty, Unemployment and money trouble are struggling so, she uses sexual relationship to another in an effort to succeed and survive.
In Berlin stories shows chronicles and misadventures in life. In Goodbye berlin part, Christopher seems the person that no expect that a life will be beautiful. In the story, he meets the girl. Her name is Sally Bowles, a cabaret singer. She is the main character and inspiration in the story. Moreover, she like fame and fortune. Moreover, she wants to be an actress. The money is the main factor to live in this Era ( Weimar Republic and Nazi). Poverty has shown in this story. Christopher compare the life before that some places was open, but now everything changes. In this story, the character that support about money is Otto. He is Peter’s partner. The reflection of the people, who wants money to be a main thing of life, without caring another people. Therefore, Her life as a camera. Doris’s character shows a growing character because woman becomes free, she can do what she wants. Doris tries to be happy person even she faces the tragic life. In the same way, Christopher explains his life like the camera. “I am a camera with its shutter open, quite passive, recording, not thinking” (Isherwood 207). The shutter always on to record everything happens. Moreover, the historical moment, politics and culture shows how the people survive in the tragedy.

Blog post #4 Second Essay

In my second essay, I am going to compare, “The Outward Room”, Millen Brand and “Metropolis”. Firstly, I will focus on “Death” from two stories. In The Outward room, Harriet always talks about death because she feels she has nothing after her brother died. Even though she’s alive, she suffers from her depression. In contrast, Metropolis, is the story that compare two classes of people: boss and workers. “Death” in Metropolis shows the workers that work hard all the times with struggling. In the film, the workers got highest pressure from working, then they died. Moreover, the Freder’s tower changes to be a place likes a hell. The worker sacrifice themselves to the death.

Secondly, In Great Depression Era, Women have to work to get money for taking care children and family. In The Outward Room, Harriet fined a job while John was working, because she wants to help him. In contrast, the workers work hard in Metropolis, then they try to change their life to be better.
Thirdly, I like the word “Meditator” and “Therapist”. In Metropolis, “Meditator” is someone who can help or change the inequality of two classes of people. In contrast, “Therapist”, in The Outward Room is Dr. Devlin, who want to help Harriet from her sadness. Moreover, John is the person that can take care of her and bring her to life. Finally, Maybe I will add more about “Earth’s surface” in Metropolis and “darkness” in The Outward Room.

Blog#3 Where am I ?

Last weekend, I went to the church with my friendship family, and then I went to the park. Although I went to the church three times with them, I am still wondered about this place. Many people come to pray and go to the bible study. I saw many families. For me, the internal forces are religious belief and sense of identity. I still feel wondered in everything that the speaker said, because I did not understand the religious meaning. Moreover, I am a Buddhism.
Everyone was singing the religious song. In contrast, I was standing and kept silence. Many teenagers was looking at me, because I did not sing a song. I was worried how people will look at me. I felt I did not know what I should do in the church. I chose the similar situation from “The Hem of Manhattan” by Djuna Barnes. “And there some were walking about, looking over at us as we looked back at them” (Barnes 74). It shows someone can be one the part of another people.

After backing from the church, I have decided walk around the university. The first thing I felt really cold when I was walking out the dorm. The weather was cold, and had too much snow. I felt really different between here and home. My home is really hot. Actually, I felt alone, was thinking about home and family. Furthermore, I was thinking about quiz that I was going to fail. Moreover, I felt I want someone to say to me just “It is ok” like everyone in my family always say that. I really tired. “There’s no place like home,” (Barnes 75). Although we compare some situation or places that we have relationship with, it is influenced the feeling when we have to see something new.
“Here we live and go through the usual daily program because we must; but it is only when one travel” (Barnes 71).Actually, if we have a goal or purpose that we have to do, we will have to pass some new situation that is going to happen. We are not only just accept, but we also have to do.

Moreover, I will get the text that related with my argument by telling the bad situation, which happened in her past, it has affected her brain.
The reader will learn about her negative feelings that are affected by drinking. Moreover, the flashback of her past haunted her.
The purpose of this story is about unforgettable end, because she lives in the city with happily and depressive emotions in the same time. In her essay “Above all, no crying in public, no crying at all if I can help it.” (Rhys 13)

New Experiences of “Street Haunting”

“That bowl on the mantelpiece” the narrator was thinking at her house about the blue and white china bowl, which she got from the old woman at the hotel. The memory of the old women who pulled off her skirt , then she gave her the bowl by giving reason. The old woman wanted to forget everything that happened to her with her husband. The situation that the owner had fought with his wife came to Woolf’s mind. Moreover, the situation made her think that the old woman wanted to jettisoned of the problems that she had. Then the narrator saw the vines laced with the stars up on the sky, this feeling came to her mind, she felt very strong and stable. After that she saw brown stain on the carpet and made her think something happened in the past as the old woman. In my opinion, it is same as the mirror that reflect every action of human life and human mind. All of memories can remind the opinions and value of human’s life.

She went to the pencil shop. Moreover she saw the arguing spouses. They were arguing about finding the pencil at the store. She was thinking about everything happened to her. There were many contrast and weird situations. She described everything deeply, and showed many feelings. “Let us go on and buy this pencil.” Pencil is the excuse as the task of the hand and keep always something in her mind. Moreover she wants to find herself when she goes out. Finally, she purchased the pencil. Although she can not change everything to be better or good, she can change everything she has met by using a pencil.
